Can you believe this?
May. 29th, 2004 04:29 pmWell, NOW I have something to post about. Have you seen this? It's a bill in the House of Representatives, H.R. 163, that calls for reinstating the draft. There's also an identical Senate bill, S. 89, which you can look at here.
This bill, if passed, calls for a 2-year period of service for 18-26 year-olds of both genders. Yes, the bill has a clause amending the Military Selective Service Act (50 U.S.C. 453(a)), so that women are eligible for the draft.
I don't know about you, but I've no desire to get drafted to support the so-called 'war' in Iraq! Were we engaged in a true conflict that in some way threatened us or others, I could accept such a measure. But to draft citizens in order to support a military action that is essentially the U.S. acting as a bully and thief? No thank you! Pardon my language, but what the hell are we doing in Iraq anyway? Barely any/no evidence linking Iraq to 9/11. No WMDs. Excuse me, but the only thing we're doing over there is creating bad feeling and garnering horrific press for ourselves. (cf this, this, and this. Also here, but graphic image warning on that. And bias, the site is www.antiwar.com.) If we don't have enough troops to continue our 'military efforts', maybe we should, uhm, hmm, let me see.... Stop?!
Read the bill -- as government docs go, it's an easy read -- and if you agree that it's a bad idea, contact your Congressmen!
