So I've been trying to fix the way my website displays in Firefox. (side rant: despite the snobbery of Firefox users, Firefox is the only browser that has been unable to display the site properly thus far -- though I haven't tried Opera.)
At any rate, I ventured out into the wonderful wide world of coding help forums, dizzying though it is. And my god! The arrogance of the anti-tables set! You would think, to judge by the way they jump on anyone posing a question about getting a table to align properly, that every table-using coder is a personal affront to them, and every table-layout page on the internet an ugly chop job, no matter how lovely it is from an end user's perspective. They even mocked people who were using table tags to display data tables!
The discussions on alt tags versus title tags creating tooltips were almost as frightening.
I'm all for "the right tool for the right job," here, but frankly I'd rather fill my toolbox with fewer, more versatile tools than with mountains of highly-specialized ones. If tables can serve a useful purpose beyond displaying data, let them! The deeper I delve into coding, the more I'm convinced there are a bunch of snotty perfectionists over at W3C who want to be able to feel superior because no one can write "perfect" code.

I feel so left out... :(
Date: 2006-04-07 01:57 pm (UTC)Forgot about your old friend Scott? The professional website designer? The one who's been speaking at conferences lately about web accessibility and usability techniques? The one who's writing a book on designing sites with web standards and usability in mind?
I'm an elitest, but I'm also your friend, and you can ask me any question about HTML/CSS/whatever you want, whenever you want. My AIM is FSF Scott2. Come and find me.
Love ya,
Scott
