Contains one minor spoiler for season 3, relating to Branson & Sybil having the kid.

Do we have any sense of the historical timeline for the family and the estate? Because Robert says, "There hasn't been a Catholic Crawley since the Reformation!" and I, at least, felt the implication was the family was already ennobled at the time. But the seat is Downton Abbey, which usually indicates a history as an actual abbey which was sold or gifted following the Dissolution. So did they have a different seat before? Were they more minor gentry and the earldom was granted, as so many were, to cement the loyalty to H8 and his reforms? Am I totally overthinking this?

PS -- I am aware there was an actual historical Earl of Grantham, but I think it's pretty safe to say there's not supposed to be any connection in the world of Downton Abbey. (Although the 1st Earl of Ripon is frighteningly like Matthew/Dan Stevens)
